Popular Immigration Category in Saskatchewan Fills Within Hours of Reopening

CIC News
Published: January 4, 2017

It was a busy morning in the offices of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), which received 500 new applications for its International Skilled Worker - Occupations In-Demand sub-category in just a few hours after reopening on January 4. The speed at which this popular Canadian immigration sub-category opened and closed highlighted, once again, the necessity for potential applicants to be fully prepared at any moment to submit an application.

(Update: Since this article was first published, the SINP International Skillled Worker - Express Entry sub-category also reopened for 500 new applications. This intake cap was reached within 24 hours.)

The International Skilled Worker - Occupations In-Demand sub-category allows skilled workers with experience in an in-demand occupation to make an application for a SINP provincial nomination certificate. With this certificate, the applicant may then apply to the federal government for permanent residence. A job offer is not required under this base sub-category, which is not aligned with the federal Express Entry system.

This sub-category opened on numerous occasions throughout 2016. Typically, the intake cap is reached quickly, often within days, or even hours. The fact that this sub-category has reopened again so early in 2017 suggests that Saskatchewan will look to welcome many new applications this year too.

Saskatchewan, with its high standard of living and plentiful employment opportunities, has become an increasingly popular immigration destination over recent years.

Among other eligibility requirements, applicants must be skilled in an in-demand occupation. The current list contains 21 occupations across a range of industries, notably in engineering, trades, agriculture, health care, and IT. A full list of in-demand occupations may be found below.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
