Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released updated data showing the estimated processing times for various temporary residence applications as of July 22.
The immigration department’s latest figures point to moderate movement across several categories, led by changes in work permit wait times.

The most notable changes to processing times seen in this update include:
- Work permits: Increase of three weeks for Pakistan, one week for the Philippines;
- Visitor visas: Five-day decrease for In-Canada submissions; and
- Super visas: Decrease of five days for the Philippines.
No changes were recorded in study permit wait times for any of the five countries featured below.
This article examines how processing times for newly submitted temporary residence applications shifted between July 15 and July 22.

Work permits
Processing times for work permit applications submitted from within Canada continue to improve, while Pakistan and Philippines saw wait times lengthen.

Understanding processing times and service standards
Applicants can consult IRCC’s published processing times for an approximate indication of how long a permanent residence, temporary residence, or citizenship application may take to be finalized.
These figures are intended as general guidance only and do not guarantee that an application will be completed within the published time frame.
The department uses two types of estimates:
- Historical processing times: based on the period required to complete 80% of applications finalized in the past; and
- Forward-looking processing times: calculated using IRCC’s current application inventory and processing capacity.
Service standards serve a different purpose. They are internal performance goals that identify how quickly IRCC aims to finalize a particular application type under normal conditions, generally covering 80% of applications.
The time required to process an individual application may differ from both the estimate and the service standard. Case complexity, backlogs, operational capacity, additional document requests, and further review requirements can all affect the final timeline.
IRCC typically updates temporary residence processing times weekly and permanent residence and citizenship estimates monthly. Service standards are reviewed less often, with those for temporary residence applications last revised in 2018–2019.
