The City of Toronto, the United Way of Greater Toronto, and Lifeline Afghanistan have launched the Toronto Region Afghan Resettlement Fund.

The three partners are collaborating to be able to provide direct resettlement support to Afghan refugees who resettle in Toronto.

Last month, the Canadian government committed to resettling at least 20,000 Afghan refugees after the Taliban retook power of Afghanistan.

Given it is Canada's largest city and leading destination of immigrants, and its large Afghan diaspora, Toronto will be a leading destination of the new Afghan arrivals.

Lifeline Afghanistan was formed a few weeks ago to mobilize stakeholders across sectors such as private citizens, community groups, educational institutions, and companies to help support Afghan resettlement efforts. Lifeline Afghanistan is also working to support the private sponsorship of Afghan refugees, as well as support their economic and social integration upon arriving to Canada.

United Way Greater Toronto will collect money donated to the Toronto Region Afghan Resettlement Fund and distribute it among frontline immigrant-serving community agencies that will help Afghans settle in the Greater Toronto Area. Supports will include providing housing, job assistance, food, clothing, and community connections.

The City of Toronto will accept corporate or large-scale donations which it will also distribute to frontline immigrant-serving community agencies. It will also coordinate policies and strategies to respond to the arrival of Afghan refugees through its Toronto Newcomer Office.

The partners are working to establish an advisory committee that will be responsible for forming partnerships, and providing accountability for the management and distribution of the funds.
