The labour market continued its positive performance in December, with employment rising by an estimated 42,000, building on robust growth in the previous three months.

ecember's employment growth was matched by an increase in the number of people participating in the labour market, leaving the unemployment rate unchanged from the previous month at 6.9%.

Between December 1998 and December 1999, employment grew by 355,000 (+2.4%), pushing down the unemployment rate by 1.1 percentage points from 8.0% to 6.9%.
