Ontario will reserve 150 provincial immigration spaces for foreign workers in Nipissing District, according to the City of North Bay.

The City of North Bay’s Economic Development Department published the quota on its official website on Oct. 26, 2026, on a web page which returns a 404 error as of the time of writing.

CIC News reached out to the city for comment and did not receive a response by the time of publication.

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) plans to issue the nominations for permanent residence in 2027, through its Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) initiative.

To be considered for permanent residence through the REDI initiative, a foreign worker must have a job offer within Nipissing District, must meet the minimum criteria of an OINP stream, and must submit an online expression of interest with the support of their employer.

The OINP will select candidates and notify those selected of their opportunity to apply.

Those invited may submit an application for provincial nomination, and if approved, they can use their nomination to apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for permanent residence.

Currently, the OINP’s only active pathway to permanent residence is the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream.

Ontario has also selected five other regions to participate in the 2026–2027 REDI initiative:

  • Greater Sudbury/Grand Sudbury;
  • Kenora District;
  • Rainy River District;
  • Renfrew County; and
  • Thunder Bay.

The OINP released the list of participating regions on its REDI initiative web page on Oct. 14.

For the geographic boundaries of each region, OINP uses the census divisions established by Statistics Canada.

Of the six regions participating in the 2026–2027 REDI initiative, only Nipissing District and Thunder Bay have publicly confirmed their nomination allocations as of Nov. 3.

Ontario’s REDI initiative operates within the OINP, with the province reserving a share of its annual nomination allocation for eligible workers in participating regions outside the Greater Toronto Area.

Under the previous iteration of REDI, which ran from Jan. 2 to Dec. 31, 2025, the OINP distributed 800 nomination spaces across four regions, with Lanark County, Leeds and Grenville, Sarnia-Lambton, and Thunder Bay each receiving 200.

As of the time of writing, the OINP has not posted any updates to its website concerning how it plans to allocate REDI nominations for 2027.
