Groundbreaking Express Entry Draw Has Lowest CRS Requirement of All Time

February 8, 2017 by CIC News

A Canadian flag waving against a blue skyCanada’s Express Entry immigration selection system continues to grow apace, with the latest draw, which took place on February 8, having the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) point requirement of all time. Candidates with 447 or more CRS points received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Moreover, this was the largest draw of all time; a total of 3,664 ITAs were issued.

This draw was also the first ever draw in which candidates with CRS scores below 450 were issued an ITA. The 450-point threshold was seen by many stakeholders as an important one, as this was previously the lowest threshold of any draw since Express Entry was first launched more than two years ago.

The latest Express Entry draws for immigration to Canada have seen a decrease in the CRS point requirement

The latest trends in Express Entry, however, show that the CRS requirement may continue to decrease in future draws. While there is no way of predicting exactly how futures draws may look, representatives from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) have stated that ‘It can be expected that in general the low score for rounds will decline.’

Indeed, this prediction ties in with improvements that were made to the Express Entry system last November. Among the changes made at that time was a reduction in the number of CRS points awarded for a qualifying job offer, from 600 points down to 50 or 200 points, depending on the position offered.

IRCC predicted that, as a result, ‘A reduction of points to candidates with arranged employment means the CRS cut-off will decline,’ adding that that it wanted to ‘balance the Comprehensive Ranking System to put greater weight on human capital, skills and experience.’

Those changes, though significant, are not the only contributing factor to the decrease in the CRS requirement over recent weeks and months. The fact that the latest draw is nearly five times larger than draws that took place over the summer months of 2016 has also had a major impact on the decreasing CRS score over recent draws.

The latest Express Entry draws for immigration to Canada have become larger, with more Invitations to Apply issued than ever before

Some scenarios

The variety of candidate profiles being selected for an ITA increases as the CRS requirement goes down. The following scenarios represent a range of hypothetical profiles, and are not real Express Entry candidates.

Martina is fluent in English, and has completed two post-secondary credentials, one of which was a Bachelor’s Degree. She is 34 years old and has completed four years of work outside Canada. She doesn’t have a job offer in Canada, nor does she have a provincial nomination, but her profile is worth 447 CRS points, enough to get an ITA in the latest draw.

Riyad is 30, has a Bachelor’s Degree obtained outside Canada, and advanced English ability. He also has adequate-intermediate French ability, equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7. He has never been to Canada, but has accrued three years of skilled work experience outside the country. His 448 points were enough for him to get an ITA in the latest draw.

Like Riyad above, 33 year-old Anna has also never been to Canada and is also single. However, she is educated up to Master’s Degree level. This level of education not only gives her extra points within the core human capital factors; it also triggers a bounty of additional points within the combination (skills transferability) factors, when combined with her initial advanced language ability and three years of foreign work experience. Overall, this was enough for her to be awarded 447 CRS points.

40 year-old Thomas was eligible to enter the Express Entry pool under the Federal Skilled Worker Class. He has a Bachelor’s Degree obtained outside Canada, as well as another post-secondary diploma. He has initial advanced language ability, six years of foreign work experience, and plans on immigrating to Canada with his spouse, who also has initial advanced language ability. The spouse did not study beyond post-secondary level. Thomas entered the pool with 402 points, but quickly worked hard to reach potential employers in Canada. Ultimately, he was able to obtain a qualifying job offer and 50 additional CRS points, bringing his CRS score to 452.

More candidates, greater variety

“What we are beginning to see more and more over recent draws is that candidates who had not received a large number of points in one or two areas — for example, an account of their age, language ability, or having never worked or studied Canada — are being invited to apply, whereas previously this may not necessarily have been the case,” says Attorney David Cohen.

“Not only are more candidates being invited, but there is now a greater variety in the types of candidates who have one foot in Canada. Moreover, the latest trends offer a great deal of hope to those who have not yet been invited. Indeed, such candidates have as much incentive as ever to strive to improve their score, perhaps even more so than ever before.”

A New CRS Calculator is Available

Candidates in the Express Entry pool, as well as individuals thinking of creating an Express Entry profile, can use the new and improved CRS Calculator to find out what their score would be under the new points system.

For sure, as per the cut off trend, the score is very likely to further decrease to 430 within late March or early April. I just received my ITA on the 23rd of December 2017,I am busy submitting the additional documents now. I assure that you will get an ITA during the mentioned time. Even my friend, with 438 points is eagerly waiting to receive an invitation.

Your son seems to have huge prospects in terms of immigrating to Canada. That is because education such as a Master’s or a Post Graduation degree from any of the Canadian educational institutes are highly recognized within immigration boundaries. The invitation to Canada is based on the points that your son might secure and according to my knowledge, your son will get good points as he is a former student in Canada like myself. Furthermore receiving a work experience certificate from Canada will increase his points. The more the number of year’s of work experience, the merrier. I recommend to gather more work experience or add the previous work experience documents (if any) while filing for permanent residency. I had 4 and a half year’s of work experience, out of which 1 year was from one of the organizations in Canada, I just received the invitation in December 2016.

Hello, you can most definitely improve your IELTS scores, however, as per the cut off trend, the score is very likely to further decrease to 430 within late March or early April. If you sit for another IELTS examination, that will be a futile attempt and a waste of money as if you receive an invitation within March or April, (as IELTS requires 2 weeks to provide results, plus the examination dates depend on slots which are not readily available, it is according to their time line and convenience, not your’s.) the IELTS new and improved results will not be required at all as the purpose is solved.

Gradually the score will decrease by 5(since I am 34 years old). Will I get my PR visa to Canada in such a scenario? Expecting for your valuable reply. Thanks in advance.

Once you receive an Invitation your scores are locked and nothing will change, therefore you should just focus on submitting the additional documents after the invitation, the faster you provide the documents, the faster you receive the PR. Here documents are referred to Medical and Police Clearance certificate from anywhere you have lived for more than 6 months.

I am sorry to learn about your wife. I would like to inform you that you can definitely apply for express entry and receive an invitation if you have enough points. You will no longer be able to come to Canada on the basis of your previous PR invitations as it was way back in the 80s. I would recommend you to visit a lawyer and just ask him to calculate your points, if it is more than 440 or 450, you are good to go. Also, please read more about express entry, you will be able to count your own points from CIC website. All the best.

The marks that you secure will determine a major part of your express entry points and will create a huge impact in your PR file. Please write with pencil and do not exceed the word limit which will be mentioned.

    Bonjour,

I have a couple of questions. Is considered being single a better situation than having a family?
Is it adviced to apply for an Express Entry without having experience working or studying in Canada given the current situation and fail, then apply again hopefully after having study in Canada. I have a masters from the UK and ideally I want to pursue a Phd in Canada through a scholarship, which is obviously difficult to get. Would I be reducing my chances in the future by applying now?

my sis is on a visitor visa that has a 5 year validity from 2016. she came to visit me in September 2016 and is currently in Canada . However, she wants to get permanent residence or work in canada without having to go back to her home country to apply. She was previously a supervisor for the last 4yrs at Kentucky fried chicken outside of canada. She left that job due to on the job stress and personal stress of not being able to financially care for herself and children .The pay she receives from her job is under paid for her experience and role of a supervisor. She is also unhappy about her children’s living conditions with minimal health care and bullying from other kids at their school. She also has martial problem with her husband who is unfaithful. She wants to remain here in Canada to better her life and the living situation for herself and her kids. she did not finish high school due to early pregnancy. and had minimal income. She sees a lot of opportunity and potential for her to grow here in Canada and provide a much better life for herself and kids. Right now she live with me and provide childcare for my kids. I am on OW and currently doing an upgrading course for 6 months to help with my job search. what can u suggest for my sister?. Her 6 month authorized visit ends on march 2017. I was thinking about applying for caregiver (kids) or permanent residence under humanitarian and compassionate ground. Is there any positive route to take without having to return back to her home country?

This system definitely does not account for people like myself. I have been working in Canada as a Pastor for 5+ years on a Clergy visa. I am 43 (which works against me). I have 3.5 years of university but no degree so 0 points. I have a valid job offer but the system does not recognise that I do because a religious worker job classification does not require a LMIA. I qualify for EE, but with a score of 222, I don’t think they will be picking me anytime soon. I would just like to stay working in the job I have already been doing for many years. Should be simple, but it’s not.

I have filed my CIC application on 19 March 2016 and my Profile would be expiring on 20 March 2017 according to the rules. My CRS scores stand at 438. Looking at the Cut-off trends, am hopeful of getting through in the coming draws.

What if I get an invitation before 20 March 2016 and my profile expires. Will that invitation stand valid? OR it be better if I file a new application?

Hi ! I have created a express entry profile a couple of weeks back with a score of 440. As per the last draw, the cutoff came down to 441. I have recently got a letter of interest for the applying for the Ontario PNP. Would like to know if that would help or would be beneficial in any ways considering the fact that the cutoff is likely to go below 440 in the next draw

I have scored 450 points in the express entry. My question is, like the trend shows the least points that was offered an invitation was 434, does that mean in the next draw anyone above that point will get an invitation? Is that how it works or they choose whom they want to give an invitation?
