Canada’s immigration department has extended measures providing work permits for Haitian and Sudanese nationals.

In a notice published in its online newsroom on Oct. 27, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that the measures, which had been set to expire on the same day, would be extended until Dec. 30, 2027.

The measures will allow eligible foreign workers to apply to extend their work permits.

To be eligible, a foreign worker must hold a valid work permit issued under the previous temporary measures.

Applications for work permit extensions will be subject to standard processing fees, according to the notice.

When a foreign worker in Canada applies for a work permit prior to the expiry of their existing permit, they benefit from maintained status, which authorizes them to continue working under the conditions of their existing permit until a decision is made on their application.

IRCC put in place previous temporary measures for Haitians on May 23, 2024.

The earlier temporary measures for Sudanese nationals were announced on April 24, 2023, and came into effect on April 30.
