Some Canadian citizens and permanent residents will soon have the opportunity to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.

The federal government will send out invitations to potential sponsors starting on July 28, 2025.

Sponsor your parents and grandparents for Canadian immigration

The government will send 17,860 invitations over the course of a two-week period, with the aim of accepting 10,000 complete applications for this year.

All invitations will be sent to potential sponsors who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020.

Potential sponsors who do not receive invitations can sponsor their relatives through the super visa program, which provides visitor status for up to 10 years.

About the Parents and Grandparents Program

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is family reunification pathway to permanent residency.

Under the PGP, eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians can sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.

Since demand for the program exceeds available spots, the government uses a lottery system to send invitations to interested sponsors.

Sponsors must receive an invitation before being able to apply to sponsor their relatives under the PGP.

The PGP opened submission for interest to sponsor forms in 2020, and has not since reopened for submitting interest to sponsor forms.

All invitations to apply under the PGP have been sent to potential sponsors who submitted interest to sponsor forms in the 2020 intake.

About the super visa

The super visa provides an option for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to host their parents or grandparents in Canada for an extended period of time.

Under the super visa program, an eligible host can sponsor their relative(s) to visit them in Canada.

The super visa can provide visitor status for up to 10 years.

In contrast, normal visitor status in Canada is typically issued for up to only six months.

To be eligible for the super visa, the applicant must purchase qualifying health insurance and must be admissible to Canada.

The host must promise to support their relative(s) for the duration of their stay, and must meet minimum income requirements.
