A Fresh Start in Canada

For many refugees and immigrants, arriving in Canada is both a relief and a challenge. Safety is restored, but uncertainty begins. One Syrian couple arrived in British Columbia with hope for a better life, yet faced the familiar barriers of language, culture, and finding stable work.

“Less than a year after we arrived in BC, we’ve had remarkable success,” the husband shared. “I have a job, allowing us to live a stable life, and my wife is improving her English, learning about Canadian culture, and making friends daily.”

Their story reflects the determination of thousands of newcomers who arrive each year and shows how the right support can transform lives.

Why English is the Key to Belonging

Language is the foundation of success for newcomers. Without English, even simple daily activities can feel overwhelming. Booking a doctor’s appointment, applying for work, or meeting your child’s teacher becomes a challenge. The Syrian couple recognized this immediately.

They joined the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at ISSofBC. These free English classes for newcomers in Canada, available both online and in-person, are designed to help immigrants learn practical English while also introducing Canadian culture, workplace expectations, and community resources.

Building Skills for Work and Life

For the husband, the LINC classes provided language skills directly connected to his goal of finding employment. Within months, he secured a job in construction, one of the most in-demand industries in British Columbia. With better English, he could communicate clearly with colleagues, follow safety instructions, and feel confident on the job site.

Meanwhile, his wife focused on improving her English through daily LINC lessons. She learned how to connect with neighbours, access local services, and take part in Canadian traditions. More importantly, she began building friendships that made her feel welcome and less isolated.

More Than English: A Path to Integration

The LINC program is more than language instruction. It is a pathway to belonging. Students learn everyday English, but they also discover Canadian culture, workplace etiquette, and how to participate in community life.

Through LINC online classes, immigrants and refugees gain:

  • Confidence to apply for jobs and speak with employers.
  • Practical skills to communicate with schools, healthcare providers, and local services.
  • Connections with classmates who share similar journeys.
  • A sense of community that helps them feel at home in Canada.

For the Syrian couple, these lessons meant moving from survival to stability. They are not only learning English, they are building a future.

The Bigger Picture

Every day, ISSofBC welcomes newcomers who want to contribute to their communities and give back to the country that has offered them safety and opportunity. These immigrant success stories remind us that supporting newcomers benefits everyone. Skilled workers fill critical jobs, families become active community members, and Canada grows stronger through diversity.

This is why free English programs like LINC are so important. They don’t just teach words. They build bridges between people, cultures, and futures.
