preparing for a language exam

Getting ready for a high-pressure exam like CELPIP can feel daunting, especially when speaking in a second language. To help you gain confidence and perform at your best, here’s our 8-step guide to strengthen your speaking skills and improve your score.

1. Practice Regularly

The most effective way to improve your speaking skills is through consistent practice. Speak English whenever you can: chat with family members, talk to a cashier, or start a conversation while commuting. The more you use the language, the more natural and confident you’ll become.

2. Understand the Instructions

Take your time to carefully read each prompt during the test. You’ll have time to prepare, so use it wisely to understand what’s being asked and to organise your thoughts. Visualise yourself in the described situation to make your response more natural and relevant.

3. Fully Answer the Question

Provide detailed, complete responses so evaluators can accurately assess your abilities. Expand on your ideas, include examples, and stay focused on the topic. Make sure to use all the time provided to you.

4. Use Personal Experience

Whenever possible, draw from your own life experiences. Sharing real stories makes your answers more genuine and easier to explain. It also helps you speak more confidently rather than inventing a story.

5. Speak Clearly and Calmly

You’ll be using a microphone, so speak directly into it. Before the test begins, take the opportunity to test your audio. Find a comfortable pace, tone, and volume to ensure your speech is easy to understand.

6. Avoid Repetition

Display your vocabulary by employing a range of words and expressions. Instead of repeating the prompt or the same phrases, try rephrasing ideas and using synonyms to showcase language diversity.

7. Don’t Worry About Your Accent

Your accent doesn't impact your score! What matters most is clear communication, proper grammar, diverse vocabulary, and thorough answers.

8. Manage Your Time Wisely

Watch the on-screen timer carefully. Use the preparation time to plan your answer, and the speaking time to deliver it completely. Try to finish your response before time runs out and make the most of the time you have.
