In contrast, most American applicants can expect to wait about a year, as of the time of writing, to receive their proof of Canadian citizenship certificates, which have become a hot commodity in 2026.

Last year, Canada removed the first-generational limit to inheriting Canadian citizenship for anyone born before December 15, 2025.

With the coming into force of the changes to the Citizenship Act, millions of Americans with Canadian ancestry gained the right to Canadian citizenship, including many whose families had lived entirely in the United States for four or more generations.

Proof of Canadian citizenship certificates are issued by Canada’s citizenship department to individuals born outside Canada who have inherited citizenship, including those born in the United States who now legally qualify as U.S.-Canadian dual citizens.

This spring, processing times have increased dramatically, as thousands of Americans have been applying, including many LGBTQ Americans who have become concerned for their safety in the current political environment in the United States.

Specifically, a number of users across the web identifying themselves as trans Americans have reported having received their Canadian citizenship certificates in as little as two weeks through expedited processing.

LGBTQ Americans with Canadian ancestry may qualify for expedited processing under the criteria established by Canada’s citizenship department.

According to the Canadian government’s help centre, applicants can apply for urgent processing “to help avoid situations of harm or hardship due to factors such as” “sexual orientation” “gender identity or expression,” or “membership in particular groups.”

Urgent processing is also available in cases where applicants need urgent access to social benefits, such as healthcare, and/or to legal status in Canada for the purpose of employment or education.

To apply for urgent processing, an applicant must include a letter of explanation for the urgent processing request along with supporting documents, in addition to their complete proof of citizenship application.

If the officer reviewing the file judges that the applicant qualifies for expedited processing, the citizenship department will expedite the request, although there are no guarantees as to the processing time.

A proof of citizenship application must be submitted on paper by mail or courier, including the appropriate completed application form(s), along with copies of accepted official documents proving the applicant’s continuous line of descent from a Canadian ancestor, such as a series of birth certificates and marriage certificates.

Applications must adhere to exacting standards. Minor errors or omissions, such as including non-compliant photos, failing to attach proof of payment, or leaving a field blank, can result in an application being rejected without processing.

When applying for a proof of Canadian citizenship certificate, applicants can select one of three genders: F (female), M (male), or X (another gender).

If applying for their first citizenship certificate and selecting a different gender than that on their birth certificate, an applicant must also submit a Request for a Change of Sex or Gender Identifier form (IRM 0002). No medical records or other documentation are required; gender selection is entirely at the applicant’s discretion.

Applicants can handle their applications themselves, or can hire representatives legally authorized by the Canadian government, such as Canadian immigration lawyers licensed under provincial law societies.

Once a citizen by descent receives their certificate, they can apply for a Canadian passport, the application for which is typically processed within 10-20 business days, as of the time of writing.
