Achieving CELPIP Level 7, equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7, is an important milestone, especially if you're preparing to immigrate to Canada. But if you're looking to strengthen your Express Entry profile, reaching Level 9 (CLB 9) in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking can make a meaningful difference.

Depending on your immigration pathway and qualifications, higher language proficiency can mean more points toward your application. And while Level 9 is a valuable goal, achieving it takes more than memorizing vocabulary or practising test questions.

The key is building on your existing English skills to understand information more accurately, develop ideas more fully, and communicate with greater precision and confidence.

Here are practical strategies to strengthen each of the four skills assessed on the CELPIP-General Test.

Listening: Capture what matters, not every word

The CELPIP Listening Test assesses how well you understand spoken English in everyday situations, including conversations, discussions, and news reports.

To improve your performance, focus on identifying important details, recognizing opinions, and understanding what speakers mean, even when they don't state something directly.

Take notes strategically. You don't need to remember everything you hear. Instead, record key information using short phrases, abbreviations, and symbols. For example, rather than writing, "The meeting was moved from Tuesday to Thursday because the room was unavailable," you could write:

Meeting: Tue → Thu / room unavailable

This captures the essential information without distracting you from the recording.

Follow the conversation's progression. Organize your notes chronologically, paying attention when speakers change their minds, introduce a problem, or suggest a solution. These details may be important when answering questions.

Listen beyond the words. A speaker might express frustration or disappointment without using those exact terms. Practise recognizing how tone, context, and word choice reveal someone's attitude or intentions.
Put it into practice
Listen to a short Canadian English news report or conversation without pausing. Record the main topic, two important details, and any opinions expressed. Listen again to identify what you missed.

Reading: Find information faster and understand it more deeply

Success in the CELPIP Reading Test isn't simply about reading quickly. It's about identifying relevant information, understanding how ideas connect, and recognizing meaning even when the wording changes.

Skim for structure before focusing on details. Quickly identify the passage's main topic and how the information is organized. For passages with multiple paragraphs, create a brief mental outline or jot down a few keywords describing each paragraph's focus. This gives you a reference point when locating answers.

Look for meaning, not just matching words. Reading questions may paraphrase information rather than repeat the passage's exact language. For example, a question might refer to an event being postponed, while the passage describes it as delayed. Recognizing synonyms and related expressions can guide you to the correct information.

Verify your answers in context. Finding a familiar word doesn't necessarily mean you've found the answer. Read the surrounding sentences to confirm that the information supports your choice, particularly when answering questions that require an inference.

Put it into practice
Choose a short English-language article. Give yourself one minute to identify its main idea and the purpose of each paragraph. Then write three questions: one about the main idea, one about a specific detail, and one requiring an inference. Find the evidence supporting each answer.

Writing: Develop your ideas with precision and purpose

Moving toward Level 9 in CELPIP Writing means demonstrating greater control over how you express and support your ideas. Clear organization, relevant details, precise vocabulary, and varied sentence structures all contribute to stronger responses.

Go beyond stating your opinion. When you introduce an idea, explain why it matters and support it with relevant details. For example, instead of simply saying that extended library hours would benefit the community, explain how they could assist people who work during the week or students who need a quiet place to study.

Choose specific, natural vocabulary. Strong writing isn't about using the most complicated words you know. It's about choosing language that communicates your meaning accurately. Replace vague expressions with more descriptive terms when appropriate, and avoid repeating the same words unnecessarily.

Make connections between your ideas. Use logical transitions and varied sentence structures to show how your points relate. Each supporting detail should contribute to your overall message, rather than feeling like a separate thought.

Remember to leave enough time to review your response for clarity, grammatical accuracy, and completeness.

Take a paragraph from a previous writing exercise. Identify the main point, then strengthen it by adding a specific detail and explaining how that detail supports your argument.

Speaking: Make your ideas clear, complete, and convincing

Strong CELPIP Speaking performance involves more than pronunciation or fluency. Raters also consider how well you develop and organize your ideas, use vocabulary, and address the task.

At Level 9, speakers demonstrate greater precision and complexity in their communication. That doesn't mean every sentence needs to be complicated or that minor mistakes are unacceptable.

Use preparation time effectively. Before speaking, identify your main message and the supporting points you want to make. A brief outline can keep you focused and reduce unnecessary pauses without making your response sound memorized.

Develop your answers with relevant examples. If you're expressing an opinion or recommending a solution, explain your reasoning. Think about who is affected, why something matters, or how your suggestion could work in a real situation. Specific details make your response more convincing.

Focus on clear, natural delivery. Speak at a comfortable pace, use a variety of sentence structures, and minimize unnecessary fillers or repeated self-corrections. Your goal is to make your ideas easy to understand, not to speak as quickly as possible.

Remember that there's no single formula for achieving Level 9. Test takers bring different strengths to their responses, and effective communication depends on how those skills work together.
Put it into practice
Record yourself answering a CELPIP-style Speaking question within the task's time limit. Listen for unclear explanations, repeated words, or ideas that need more detail. Record a revised response and compare the two.

Build a practice routine that targets your weaknesses

Improving from Level 7 toward Level 9 requires consistent, purposeful practice. But completing more exercises isn't always enough. Understanding why you missed a question or struggled with a response is just as important.

Start with CELPIP's free sample tests to become familiar with the format and identify areas that need attention. Use the answer keys to review your Listening and Reading performance, and CELPIP's official score descriptors to identify opportunities to improve your Writing and Speaking. Then focus your preparation on specific weaknesses, from recognizing implied meaning to developing clearer, more complete responses.

After each practice session, identify one thing you did well and one thing to improve. Revisit that skill regularly and track your progress over time.

Take the next step toward CELPIP Level 9

Improving your CELPIP score is about strengthening your English skills and learning to demonstrate them effectively under test conditions. With focused preparation, you can build the accuracy, precision, and confidence needed to work toward a higher score.

Whether you're aiming for Level 9 in one skill or all four, focus on meaningful progress rather than perfection.
